In the wake of major crises, the international community rallies with a surge of funding and resources to support displaced people. However, as the initial shock fades and global attention shifts, long-term support for displaced people diminishes, leaving millions in limbo with insufficient resources to meet their basic needs. At this event, a panel of experts will examine the persistent funding, shelter, and policy gaps in protracted refugee situations, where displacement can last for decades.

The panel will bring together donors, humanitarian practitioners, and academics — each offering unique insights into how we can address the systemic challenges that refugees face when living in protracted situations. Collectively, they will explore the implications of the gap between the provision of emergency assistance and the reality of long-term displacement, the donor community’s responsibility toward closing this gap, and potential solutions to improve refugees’ lives and well-being. This event is being held to coincide with the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly and Climate Week NYC.

This is an offsite event that will be hosted in New York at Ideal Glass Studios by the Edward P. Djerejian Center for the Middle East in collaboration with Every Shelter and Better Shelter, and will be moderated by Kelsey Norman, fellow for the Middle East and director of the Women’s Rights, Human Rights and Refugees Program.
