Simple as Water,” a film by Oscar-winning director Megan Mylan, follows several Syrian families as they attempt to build new lives and move through different obstacles in Turkey, Greece, Germany, Syria and the U.S. after fleeing war in their home country. The documentary was filmed over five years, revealing the impacts of war, separation and displacement.

On April 7, the Baker Institute Women’s Rights, Human Rights and Refugees Program co-hosted a public screening of the film at the DeLUXE Theater in Houston. Following the showing, program director Kelsey Norman moderated a conversation between Mylan and two Syrian refugee brothers, Omar and Abed Sabha, who are part of the documentary and live in Houston.

The event was co-sponsored by the Baker Institute Edward P. Djerejian Center for the Middle East, Houston Cinema Arts Society, Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services and Maram Foundation. Follow @Baker_EPDCtrME on Twitter and join the conversation with #BakerPolicy.
