Biography
Diana Strassmann, Ph.D., is a Baker Institute Rice scholar, as well as the Carolyn and Fred McManis Distinguished Professor in the Practice; director of the Program in Poverty, Justice and Human Capabilities; and a faculty affiliate at the Center for the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality and the Chao Center for Asian Studies at Rice University. She is the founding editor of the journal Feminist Economics and co-founder of the International Association for Feminist Economics.
Feminist Economics promotes dialogue about feminist economic perspectives and publishes research aimed at improving the lives of children, women and men around the world. In 1997, the Council of Editors of Learned Journals named Feminist Economics the “Best New Journal” in its international awards competition. The journal has attained high Institute for Scientific Information impacts and rankings, both among economics and women’s studies journals. Supported by such major donors as the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Ford Foundation, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and the MacArthur Foundation, the journal has attracted a wide readership, with individual subscribers in more than 60 countries and a distribution to more than 18 thousand libraries and institutions worldwide.
Strassmann has published widely in the fields of feminist economic theory, economic regulation and environmental policy. Recent work includes editing (with Lourdes Benería and Ann Mari May) a three-volume collection of feminist economics writings for the International Library of Critical Writings in Economics (Edward Elgar, 2011). Her current research focuses on gender, economic well-being and justice. Strassmann received her A.B. from Princeton University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University.
