Biography

Peter Mieszkowski, Ph.D., is professor emeritus of economics at Rice University and a Rice scholar at the Baker Institute. Mieszkowski is best known for his work on the theory of tax incidence, as well as his joint work with George Zodrow, Ph.D., on the theory of tax competition. He has also made contributions to urban economics, the theory of fiscal federalism and on the design of optimal systems of income maintenance. His most recent article, with Ronald Soligo, Ph.D., is on the governance of the oil and gas industry in the United States. He is currently working on various aspects of the recent subprime mortgage crisis. In 2009, he was awarded the Daniel M. Holland Medal by the National Tax Association for lifetime contributions to the study and practice of public finance.

Before joining the Rice Economics Department in 1981, Mieszkowski taught at Yale University, Queen’s University in Ontario, and the University of Houston. He received his bachelor’s degree from McGill University and his doctorate from The Johns Hopkins University, and was a postdoctoral fellow at The University of Chicago.
